Today we went to The Red Apple, which is a Polish buffet on Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago. We went with my sister and brother-in-law. My brother-in-law is Polish and grew up eating at this place, so it came highly recommended. The restaurant wasn't super crowded, so we got seated and waited on right away. The decor was typical for an older restaurant, kind of reminding me of the Greek family diners around here. Everything is on the buffet except for the soup. When the waitress asked if we wanted to soup, I passed. I shouldn't have. I took a bite of my sister's mushroom soup and ended up stealing the whole thing. It was amazing. There was a nice sized buffet with all the polish staples including pierogies, potato pancakes, sausage and sauerkraut, all sorts of meat, side salads, other things that I didn't know what I was eating, and the best mashed potatoes I have ever had. Everything on this buffet was delicious, which is rare for a buffet. There was also a good size dessert buffet with a wide range of traditional and not so traditional Polish deserts. I had cheesecake that was wonderful.
Everything was good about this place except for the price. We didn't see the sign that said the weekend buffet price was $20 per person. My brother-in-law was also shocked at the price saying that back in the day this was known as the cheapest buffet in Chicago.
We had a good experience at The Red Apple, and I tried many dishes that I would have normally never tried before, but I do think it was a little over priced. If you do go, go on a weekday when the price is cheaper, and don't pass when offered mushroom soup!
Overall Experience: 4 STARS
Price: Make Your Boyfriend Pay (and tell him to bring cash as they do not except cards)
